Studies from School of Medicine reveal new finding

By admin, 9 August, 2010, No Comment

Investigators publish new data in the report ‘Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation in children with overactive bladder: a randomized clinical trial.’ According to a study from Salvador, tiffany earrings, Brazil, "We evaluated the effectiveness of parasacral transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation to treat overactive bladder in children (see also <http://www.newsrx.com/library/topics/Clinical-Trial-Research.html> Clinical Trial Research). We designed a prospective randomized trial with sham control for this evaluation."

"We prospectively randomized 25 girls and 12 boys with an average age of 7.6 years (range 4 to 12) into the test (active treatment) or sham (superficial scapular electrical stimulation) group. A total of 20 sessions, 20 minutes each (10 Hz) were performed 3 times weekly. The criteria used to evaluate the rate of success were 1) self-reported cure, or significant, mild or no improvement; 2) visual analogue scale (level of success 0 to 10); 3) percent improvement; 4) modified Toronto score; and 5) maximum voided volume, average voided volume and number of voids daily based on bladder diary entries. After completion of the 20 sessions controls who were not cured underwent active treatment. A total of 21 patients in the test group and 16 in the sham group underwent treatment. Among the active treatment group 61.9% of parents reported cure. In the sham group no parent reported cure (p <0.001). Regarding visual analogue scale a score of 10 was indicated by 13 parents in the test group, while 1 parent in the sham group indicated a score of 9 (p=0.002). Additionally 100% improvement was reported by 12 parents in the test group and no parent in the sham group. Toronto score improved significantly in the test group (p <0.001) and sham group (p=0.008). However, the score was reduced more significantly in the test group compared to the sham group (p=0.011). In the test group average and maximum voided volumes showed a statistically significant increase and the number of voids daily decreased. After superficial scapular electrical stimulation 13 of the 16 patients who underwent parasacral transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation were cured, tiffany pendants," wrote P. Lordelo and colleagues, tiffany bangles, School of Medicine.

The researchers concluded: "This is the first known randomized clinical trial to demonstrate that parasacral transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation is effective in the treatment of children with overactive bladder."

Lordelo and colleagues published their study in the Journal of Urology (Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation in children with overactive bladder: a randomized clinical trial. Journal of Urology, 2010;184(2):683-9).

Suffolk woman struck boyfriend twice with car, pol

By admin, 31 July, 2010, No Comment

Police say a woman was traveling with her young daughter when she struck her boyfriend twice with her car.,Charm bracelet

The woman, 19, and her boyfriend, 29, had been arguing at Joyner’s Motel when he tried to leave about 8:30 Tuesday morning, according to a city news release. She chased him in her car, tiffany pendants, hitting him twice and knocking him down once, police said. The woman tried to block her boyfriend when he got up and at one point was blocking traffic, police said.

The man’s injuries were minor, the news release says.

The couple’s 2-year-old daughter was in the car at the time, police said.

Police charged Stephanie A. Williams, 19, of the 5600 block of Plummer Blvd., with attempted malicious wounding and child endangerment.

Williams was taken to Western Tidewater Regional Jail and released on a $5,000 bond, police said. Child Protective Services is investigating.

Police say the 1-year-old boy who was found dead Tuesday at his home had visible signs of trauma on his body.

Medical examiners are trying to determine how the boy died. An autopsy was being conducted Wednesday as police continue to investigate the boy’s "suspicious" death while in the care of his mother’s boyfriend.

Authorities received a call at 4:34 p.m. about an unresponsive child at Aqua Vista apartments. The boy, tiffany bangles, who was found in a bedroom, was pronounced dead shortly after police arrived, according to Holly McPherson, a spokeswoman for Newport News Police Department. The boy’s 5-year-old sister was also in the apartment but unharmed. McPherson said the mother of the children was at work Tuesday and her boyfriend was caring for them. The apartment complex is located in the Southeast Community behind King-Lincoln Park.

The woman’s boyfriend, who has not been charged in the boy’s death, was questioned by police Tuesday evening.

Calvin Sneed says he was passing out fliers Tuesday around 9 a.m. when he saw the woman’s boyfriend with the boy.

"The kid was running behind him. He was like, ‘This kid is so [expletive] spoiled. I told you to come on.’" Sneed said the tiny boy struggled to keep up. The boy was barefoot and only wearing a diaper, Sneed said.

Later that day Sneed heard a little boy was dead. Sneed says he realized it was the same boy from earlier when he saw police questioning the boy’s caretaker from that morning.

"When I saw the man sitting on the steps I said, ‘I know that boy.’"

Police are still investigating how the boy died and how long he had been dead when they responded.

About 100 people Tuesday evening stood on doorsteps, in stairwells and on sidewalks watching police detectives go in and out of building 668.

"It’s really sad to know that a little kid died out here," said resident Karen Brown-Harris. "A little baby that doesn’t even know what life is all about."

Carmen Craighead, who says she is a friend of the mother, said the child, as well as his 5-year-old sister, tiffany key rings, usually attended daycare with her two sons. Craighead said a daycare worker told her that the children had not been coming lately. The last time they had seen the boy, he had bruises.

Gel for women shows promise in preventing AIDS

By admin, 29 July, 2010, No Comment

Nearly three decades into the AIDS epidemic, scientists may have finally come up with the first product to block HIV infection since the condom.

It is in the form of a gel developed for women. The gel incorporates the antiretroviral drug tenofovir, which is already used as part of the "cocktail" given to AIDS patients.

It likely will first be made available in South Africa, where women often are unable to insist that their partners remain faithful or use condoms, tiffany necklaces, said Quarraisha Abdool Karim, a researcher at Columbia University and the Centre for the AIDS Programme of Research in South Africa, the group that conducted the study.

But demand is likely to extend around the world,Charm pendant, said Drexel University AIDS researcher Seth Welles. Wherever they live, he said, "people don’t like latex." And that means they engage in lots of unprotected sex.

Larger studies are testing the drug both in gel form and as a pill taken before sex. And researchers are beginning to examine whether it could prevent transmission of the virus between men.

While preliminary, the results so far were promising enough to generate a round of cheers when presented at an international AIDS meeting in Vienna last week.

The findings came from a trial that enrolled 889 women, half of whom got the drug and half a placebo. They were instructed to apply the vaginal gel up to 12 hours before having sex and again soon afterward.

The gel’s effectiveness wasn’t perfect, but the women in the trial didn’t use it every time. After 21/2 years, 38 women in the drug group became HIV-positive compared with 60 in the control group. That amounts to a 39 percent reduction in infection for those who got the drug. The reduction was 54 percent among those who reported using it at least 80 percent of the times they had sex.

The microbicide gel also had a significant protective effect against transmission of genital herpes.

Scientists have long struggled to create a product that women could use without the consent or even the knowledge of their partners. In South Africa and many other countries, "women can end up in a violent situation if they ask men to use a condom," said Drexel’s Welles. "This changes the whole dialogue about women being able to protect themselves."

Further testing may dramatically improve the gel’s effectiveness as the proper dosage and timing become clearer, said Harvard immunologist Judy Lieberman. "There’s a lot of room for improvement."

And the encouraging results for the tenofovir gel may also open the door to other protective measures, said Lieberman, who, like Welles, was not involved with the study.

Tenofovir, which is also known as Viread when given as part of an antiretroviral drug cocktail, works by disabling a protein that the HIV virus needs to replicate itself. Lieberman has formulated a protective gel using a different strategy, called RNA interference — essentially attacking the genetic material of the virus.

Though she’s gotten promising results in the lab against both HIV and herpes, tiffany bracelets, she said that when she tried to move forward with clinical trials, tiffany bangles, the costly next step, she heard nothing but skepticism from venture capitalists, biotech companies, and big pharma. They thought it was too unlikely to work, she said, and had grown skittish after the numerous failures of seemingly promising HIV vaccines.

That may finally begin to change.

Spanish Market’s evolving beauty

By admin, 28 July, 2010, No Comment

Much of the beauty of Spanish Market lies in its many facets — and how, like those of a precious stone being turned, they change from year to year, decade to decade.

At the 59th event, opening on the Plaza and surrounding streets tomorrow at 8, first-time and occasional visitors will find themselves fascinated by the very variety of offerings, entertainment and food, while folks who rarely miss it tend to be captivated by Spanish Market’s evolution and the innovations behind it.

Newcomers and veteran marketgoers, from near and far, will find the best of our region’s artistry and artesanias:

–Hand-loomed weavings, by families of Santa Fe and the villages surrounding us.

–Furnishings: tables, chairs, wardrobes, bedsteads, trunks and boxes, reflecting the tools of times gone by.

–Paintings, tiffany bangles, sculpture and other artwork.

–Santos — religious figures, tiffany rings, as carved-wood bultos and painted retablos.

–Colcha embroidery, long renowned in Northern New Mexico and gaining fame around the nation and beyond.

–Straw-appliqued woodwork in traditional and modern forms.

–Ironwork, in forms both useful and traditional in design.

–Jewelry, tiffany key rings, in silver and gold.

–Leatherwork reflecting our frontier heritage.

–Tinwork in increasingly creative forms.

That last category offers great examples of Spanish Market’s many changes, subtle as some may be:

Santa Fean Carmella Padilla is one of several noted writers whose articles appear in The New Mexican’s official guide to Spanish Market — part of Wednesday’s paper, tiffany earrings, but also available downtown now through Sunday.

Padilla tells of the innovations in that comparatively recent medium; it sprouted only a century or so ago with the arrival of tin containers, but has blossomed with intricacy. From simple designs, often nail-pointed into utilitarian items such as mirror and picture frames, candleholders and sconces, the form has moved into florid and flowing designs, even portraits. Some works even offer homage to other Spanish Market forms, such as colcha embroidery.

The many other media on display also will offer evidence of a dynamic market — which this year brings the works of 300 adult artists and scores of youngsters who’ve been learning at the side of maestros and maestras. Thanks to their efforts, and those of more than

100 year-round volunteers, Spanish Market, and Contemporary Spanish Market, along Lincoln Avenue, are highlights of the Santa Fe summer.

The atmosphere. The food, at booths behind the First National Bank. The music and dance from the Plaza’s community stage. The friends you’re likely to come across. It’s a truly fine time to be in Santa Fe.

Spanish Market and Contemporary Spanish Market are not to be missed; 8-5 tomorrow, 9-5 Sunday. See you there!

Mother of Ben Novack is a homicide victim

By admin, 17 July, 2010, 1 Comment

The death certificate of Ben Novack Jr.’s mother will soon reflect she was a victim of a homicide, Broward Medical Examiner Joshua Perper said Thursday, as he reversed his earlier findings that her death resulted from accidental falls.

Perper said that based on new eyewitness testimony, it’s clear 87-year-old Bernice Novack was bludgeoned to death on April 6,tiffany pendants, 2009, at her Fort Lauderdale home. He said this is the first time in his 16 years heading the Broward Medical Examiner’s Office that he will change the manner of death on a death certificate from accidental to homicide.

"The [new] information which [police] provided me is very solid," he said. "There is no question it is a homicide."

Perper’s new findings come a day after federal prosecutors announced in court they believe the wife of Ben Novack Jr. helped plot his murder and his mother’s death so she could lay claim to the family’s multi-million-dollar estate.

Narcy Novack, her brother and two other men were indicted last week on federal stalking and domestic violence charges related to her husband’s July 12, 2009, slaying in a New York hotel room. Federal prosecutors said Narcy Novack, 53, urged her husband’s two killers to "cut out his eyes" as she watched them beat and slash the life out of him.

Though none of the four defendants have been charged with murder, they still could face life in prison.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Elliott Jacobson said Wednesday that Narcy Novack’s brother, Cristobal Veliz, recruited two men to attack Bernice Novack. Using information provided by Narcy Novack, tiffany rings, the men snuck up on the elderly woman and struck her with a monkey wrench, the prosecutor said.

Bernice Novack was found dead in her utility room, her skull fractured and her jaw and teeth broken.

Perper initially ruled the fatal head trauma was the result of accidental falls. Fort Lauderdale police had concluded that the death was an accident. In the weeks after Ben Novack Jr.’s murder, their stances on Bernice Novack’s death remained unchanged.

On Thursday, Perper said he based his initial findings on a number of factors.

In the months before her death, Bernice Novack had a history of falls and instability, he said.

Then from the blood patterns on her car and in the house, it appears she moved throughout the house while bleeding from the head injuries, he said. In addition, the blunt force trauma she suffered did not have any special characteristics, for example a weapon imprint, he said.

There also were no signs of footprints or intrusion in the house, Perper said.

"In view of the history of falls and no indication that anyone was assaulting her, accidental death was the likely determination of death," he said.

Perper said that when Fort Lauderdale police called him Thursday morning with the eyewitness testimony, he found it fit with the crime scene. The witness, who has not been publicly identified by authorities, said Bernice Novack was assaulted in her car and she was left alive in the car, Perper said.

"The evidence they have is very firm because it is consistent with our findings," Perper said. He said he could not go into further detail about the new information provided by law enforcement.

Jacobson said at Wednesday’s court hearing that after Perper concluded Bernice Novack’s death was accidental, authorities asked the Westchester County, tiffany bangles, N.Y., Medical Examiner’s Office to review the case. That office concluded it was a homicide.

A week after Ben Novack Jr.’s murder, Miami Springs police received a letter, unsigned and written in Spanish, claiming mother and son had been killed.

Fort Lauderdale police have declined to discuss Bernice Novack’s death, referring all calls to federal authorities in New York.

In other developments, a Miami man who federal prosecutors say confessed to killing Ben Novack Jr. will not fight extradition to New York to face the stalking and domestic violence charges.

Joel Jorge Gonzalez, tiffany money clips, 25, briefly appeared Thursday morning in a Miami federal courtroom, waiving extradition and announcing he was not going to ask for bond before he is transferred to New York.

India, Pakistan Pledge Further Engagement

By admin, 16 July, 2010, 1 Comment

India and Pakistan have pledged further engagement following talks aimed at rebuilding trust between the longtime rivals.

In their first meeting since the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi said he and his Indian counterpart S.M. Krishna had "frank, candid and honest discussions" during talks Thursday in Islamabad. The two top officials from the longtime rival nations discussed terrorism, the disputed region of Kashmir, and the war in Afghanistan.

Qureshi said the talks were part of a "resumption" of the peace dialogue but he was reticent to outline what the next steps would be. India’s foreign minister also praised the talks and extended an invitation to Qureshi to visit India to continue their discussions.

The talks were dominated by India’s security concerns, tiffany necklaces, particularly the Mumbai attacks which it blames on Pakistani-based militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba.

Thursday’s meeting was somewhat overshadowed by comments a day earlier by India’s Home Secretary G.K. Pillai, tiffany earrings, who accused Pakistan’s intelligence agency of playing a much more significant role in planning the 2008 attacks than was earlier known.

Pakistan’s foreign minister condemned the comments Thursday, tiffany bangles, saying both he and Krishna felt they were uncalled-for. Pakistan has repeatedly denied that its intelligence agency was involved in the Mumbai siege and has bristled at India’s suggestion it is not doing enough to crack down on militant groups who plan attacks from Pakistani soil.

Krishna also met with Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari, who issued a statement afterward urging both governments to work more closely to "eliminate" militancy and terrorism. The Indian and Pakistani foreign ministers also discussed India’s concerns about militants infiltrating Indian-controlled Kashmir from the Pakistani side.

In Kashmir’s main city of Srinagar, tiffany key rings, thousands of protesters staged anti-India sit-ins Thursday. Indian authorities said they were monitoring the situation and may re-impose curfew restrictions.
