Islamic fashion boutique in Lodi stocks clothes in

By admin, 10 August, 2010, No Comment

While mannequins at the mall still are decked in the last of summer’s spaghetti straps, the ones in the storefront window of Al-Hayaa Islamic Fashion are draped in loose tunic blouses and anklelength skirts. "Not everyone wants to dress like Hannah Montana," said Gabull Alhadhrami. She and her sister, Zarah Abdullah-Ali, opened Al-Hayaa — it’s named for the Muslim tenet of modesty — about two years ago in a shopping center on Lodi’s Turner Road.

The sisters launched the boutique to offer fashionconscious Muslim women a shopping experience that they didn’t have while growing up in San Joaquin County: The ability to walk into a store and find racks full of items suitable both to their tastes and religious values. To browse, to try on, to ask, "What do you think of this?"

In some ways, Alhadhrami said, wearing hijab — the term refers to both the head covering Muslim women wear as well as to a modest style of dress in general — is a more complicated choice than it was when she decided to do so as a senior at Lodi High School.

Yet, at the same time, tiffany bangles, there are more shopping options and new systems of support for young women who choose to dress in a way that identifies them as Muslim.

"This is a cover-up that a lot of little girls will wear," said Alhadhrami, holding up an abaya, a dark, robe-like dress.

She then displayed tunics and head scarves and gowns.

And also long denim skirts and buttoned blouses, garments that look more typically Western than other pieces in the shop, but that still leave the body mostly covered.

Besides the store, both sisters have full-time jobs in which they interact closely with the public — Alhadhrami is a nurse practitioner and Abdullah- Ali is a teacher. Many of their clients do, too.

"They don’t want to further distance themselves, tiffany necklaces," Alhadhrami said.

It used to be, she said, that strangers put more trust in her because she wore hijab.

"It definitely was not the political climate that it is now," she said.

Islam is not the only faith that stresses modesty in women’s dress. Eternity, a national designer of modest eveningwear, for example, sells long-sleeved, high-necked "temple-ready" gowns for Mormon brides as well as a white bridal hijab.

But the decision to dress according to religious standards of modesty has become an increasingly politicized one for Muslim women.

French lawmakers have approved a ban on face-covering veils, tiffany rings, and the results of a recent poll from the Pew Research Center show adults in many other European countries would strongly support such a bill.

Most Americans, though, said they would be against it.

"I’m always baffled when people bring politics into it," said Mariam Sobh, editor of the popular Islamic fashion blog hijabtrendz.com. "For me, I’ve never seen it as a political thing."

Wearing hijab as a child and teenager was sometimes a lonely experience at school, she said. But now, she manages a website where she posts photos

of garments from mainstream stores that can be adapted by hijab-wearing women. She also encourages women to share their fashion experiences — why they choose to wear hijab, or not.

"It seems like they love personal stories because they can relate," Sobh said. She started the blog in 2007. "With the Internet, there’s so much out there. There’s so much support."

Alhadhrami and Abdullah-Ali were raised by a Mexican-American Catholic mother and an Arab-American Muslim father.

When it came to Islamic clothing, Alhadrami said, they often were limited to what could be found on a rack in the corner of a Pakistani grocery store, or "someone would make a trip abroad and bring things back and hopefully, it would be in your size."

Jasmine Ali, a sophomore at Middle College High School, chose to start wearing hijab as a fifth-grader. Depending on the season and what’s trendy, it can be difficult to find clothing in the mall, she said.

In an era of skinny jeans, "All my pants are five sizes too big."

Ali, 15, was on the San Joaquin Delta College campus this week with her best friend, Amalie Dougish, who also wears hijab — but with a more bohemian flare. She was dressed in a long, patchwork dress over a blouse with thin pinstripes.

Both girls stressed that hijab is a choice for them. "Islam is not compulsion," Ali said. "It’s a choice between you and God."

But it’s a choice that can come with challenges. They sometimes worry about anti-Muslim sentiment. And, Dougish, tiffany cuff Links, 15, said, "When you wear it, you’re representing your religion," she said. "When people see you in hijab, they don’t see you, they see all Muslim people."

At the same time, they said, they have an opportunity to carve a distinctly American Muslim identity.

"In Saudi Arabia, it’s all about the glammed-out abayas," Dougish said. "In North Africa, you see a lot of bright colors. Each place has its own …" "Mix of culture and religion," Ali finished. "We’re making ourselves American Muslims."

In this recent study, researchers in Sisak, Croatia conducted a study "To provide an evidence-based guideline for professionals working with XY women (see also <http://www.newsrx.com/library/topics/Minerals.html> Minerals). Review including patient cases from a Danish fertility clinic."

"University-associated scientific unit and fertility clinic. Three selected cases. None. Evaluation of etiology, diagnosis, treatment, and associated disorders in XY women. Many gene mutations can cause abnormal fetal development leading to androgen insensitivity syndrome or gonadal dysgenesis disorders. Females with these disorders have an XY karyotype but look like girls. They are mostly diagnosed at puberty, tiffany cuff Links, and the condition will often lead to serious psychological problems. Increased risk of malignancies and problems with pregnancy and infertility are other aspects that should be considered. This guideline will aid doctors in caring for XY females, tiffany earrings," wrote Z. Glavas and colleagues, University of Zagreb.

The researchers concluded: "A precise diagnosis is important, because the treatment possibilities (e.g., use of allogenic oocytes) depend on the subgroup to which the XY female belongs. (Fertil Steril (R) 2010;94:105-13."

According to recent research from Russia, "We compared the development of new renal damage in small children with dilating vesicoureteral reflux randomly allocated to antibiotic prophylaxis, endoscopic treatment or surveillance as the control group (see also <http://www.newsrx.com/library/topics/Nanoporous.html> Nanoporous). Included in the study were 128 girls and 75 boys 1 to younger than 2 years with grade III-IV reflux."

"Voiding cystourethrography and dimercapto-succinic acid scintigraphy were done before randomization and after 2 years. Febrile urinary tract infections were recorded during followup. was done by the intent to treat principle. New renal damage in a previously unscarred area was seen in 13 girls and 2 boys. Eight of the 13 girls were on surveillance, 5 received endoscopic therapy and none were on prophylaxis (p = 0.0155). New damage was more common in children with than without febrile recurrence (11 of 49 or 22% vs 4 of 152 or 3%, p< 0.0001). In boys the rate of new renal damage was low. It was significantly higher in girls and most common in the control surveillance group," wrote V.A. Eremeyev and colleagues, Russian Academy of Science.

The researchers concluded: "There was also a strong association between recurrent febrile UTIs and new renal damage in girls."

Gem, mineral, jewelry show in Dalton

By admin, 8 August, 2010, No Comment

Larimar is the buzzword in the gem and mineral world right now.

"Larimar comes from one square mile on one island in the Caribbean," said Van Wimmer, director of Treasures of the Earth gem and mineral shows.

"It is extremely rare and extremely expensive because it is found only in one place. I pay $540 per pound for a piece of it. To give you a comparison, Sleeping Beauty turquoise (rare, high-quality material) is $125 to $250 a pound."

Folks who haven’t seen the rare blue Larimar stone can do so this weekend at the 19th annual North Georgia Bead, tiffany necklaces, Gem,Charm pendant, Mineral and Jewelry Show.

The gem show opens today in Northwest Georgia Trade and Convention Center, tiffany cuff Links, continuing through Sunday afternoon. Twenty-five vendors from across the country will showcase everything from rare gemstones to stone beads, amber and fossils.

"We try to keep bead dealers who only deal in first-quality beads," said the show director. "Mei Leung of Canton Collectibles’ beads are made of real stone, and she also has high-quality pearls from China."

Wimmer said there will be gold and silversmiths on-site, along with wire-wrap and wire-sculpture artists.

"A common occurrence at these shows is that customers will come in, pick stones and settings that can be put together on the spot. Visitors can bring pieces for repair or bring in stones and choose a new mount for them," said Wimmer, who adds the repairs are made only in real metals.

The show director said the $3 ticket permits admission throughout the three-day event to allow time for custom pieces to be made; the customer avoids a second admission when returning to pick up the completed piece.

Wimmer said vendors are happy to verify stones or metals used in customers’ jewelry pieces brought to the show and will give estimates of approximate prices but not appraisals.

"A true appraisal takes from a half to full day and requires taking stones out of the mount," he said.

He said no selling is allowed by anyone other than the 25 paying vendors.

"Our show dealers do not buy scrap gold or other metals including old jewelry or gemstones. That’s illegal now," he said.

"Our specialty is helping people get custom-made jewelry or jewelry repair. We have jewelry makers, goldsmiths and silversmiths from all over the U.S. who can reconstruct, tiffany rings, repair, design or make original jewelry from customer-selected gems, stones, opals and crystals," Wimmer said.

Scents and self-representation

By admin, 5 August, 2010, No Comment

"Whoop, whoop!" went the girls. Weep, weep! went the emotional super-fans. At Harrods last week, Jennifer Aniston (pictured) followed Britney Spears,Tiffany cuff links, Julio Iglesias and Luciano Pavarotti and launched her own perfume.

I sprayed a sample in the air and sniffed. "Jen sprays and then walks into the fragrance," said the PR person. "That’s so that you don’t over-spritz,Tiffany Watches," Aniston told me. The scent was sweet,Tiffany bracelets, clean and sexy, with a top note of jasmine. "It was one of those first sense memory things," said Aniston of the flower, one of her favourite childhood smells. "I had a specific idea of what I wanted that [fragrance] to be: a representation of myself, not what some ad agency’s representation of myself was. I’m usually pretty much misrepresented all the time." Not this time. According to Laurent Le Guernec, senior perfumer at International Flavors & Fragrances, and official celebrity "nose", who has worked with Sarah Jessica Parker, Jay-Z and Sean John: "Jennifer was involved from the beginning – more than other celebrities". Aniston appeared at the first meeting with her favourite smells ("a candle, a L’Oreal hair serum, and a body lotion that I love"), and it was she who decided on the name: "It was in the 11th hour, so I was like, ‘excuse me but f*** it, let’s just call it ‘Jennifer’." But will I wear it? Yes,Tiffany earrings, it’s light and pretty and perfect for the day; it isn’t as cloying as celebrity fragrances – "Kate", one of Kate Moss’s earlier efforts, comes to mind – and its sleek packaging is discreet enough to open in front of the family at Christmas without incurring extreme humiliation. But I like to smell of me, not someone else. Fortunately for Aniston, there are thousands of super-fans who disagree. ‘Jennifer’ is on sale at Harrods: 50ml, pound(s)29; 85ml, pound(s)36

Urban Gardner Engineered Beauty

The air-conditioning in my car died for the second time this weekend, and last night I had a dream that I pulled into some rest stop only to realize I’d forgotten the car’s ignition keys at my starting point and had coasted all the way there. "People are doing that a lot these days," some environmentally conscious young woman told me in my dream when I expressed disbelief that I’d made it that far.

If that’s not a plea from the subconscious that it’s time to buy a new car, I don’t know what is. But if I didn’t need a new car, as well as a bunch of other stuff, I’d purchase a kinetic Roger Phillips sculpture,Tiffany cuff links, a show of whose work is on display through Aug. 27 at the James Graham & Sons Gallery at 32 E. 67th St.

Mr. Phillips’s art brings to mind Alexander Calder’s mobiles, but that’s mostly because they have moving parts propelled by the wind. However, Mr. Phillips’s sculptures are more colorful and geometric, and they are spectacularly engineered at his studio, down the street from his home overlooking the Hudson River, in Stuyvesant, N.Y.

I’d go so far as to say the difference between Messrs. Calder and Phillips is the difference between Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly: Mr. Astaire was an artist; Mr. Kelly was an athlete. While that might sound like I’m slighting Messrs. Kelly and Phillips (and I may be Mr. Kelly, who I didn’t think was in Fred Astaire’s league), Mr. Phillips’s work, while less fragile than Alexander Calder’s, appeals to my sense of order, without sacrificing beauty,Tiffany earrings, in a way that Mr. Calder’s doesn’t.

"I’ve been working my whole life to get looser," Mr. Phillips said. "I keep getting more precise."

He takes brightly colored shapes, such as circles,Tiffany Sets, squares and triangles, and suspends them from brushed stainless steel bases. Institutions where they’re on public display include the University of Pennsylvania, Bard College (Mr. Phillips’s alma mater), SUNY Albany and the George Washington Carver Houses opposite Mt. Sinai Hospital at 100th Street and Madison Avenue.

Mr. Phillips works on commission, reserving the right to make an edition of four additional pieces. Before he creates the actual sculpture, in an old gas station he’s converted into his studio, he makes a maquette, or scale model. I’d like one of those, too, for my coffee table. They’re just as exquisitely crafted as the real thing, and if you commission a sculpture,Tiffany Money Clips, which costs approximately $18,000, the maquette is included.

The 79-year-old Mr. Phillips’s first experience with metal work came when he worked at a blacksmith shop in the town of Cedarhurst on Long Island when he was 12. "My job was to hold the horse," he remembered. During the 1970s he was president of the Artists Blacksmith Association of North America.

He was an English, not art, major at Bard and went on to study English literature at Oxford. "Nobody has ever come up with a definite description of art," he observed. "Shakespeare came as close as anyone, in ‘Hamlet,’ when he said the purpose of art is to hold the mirror up to nature."

When he returned from England and then the Army, and married his wife Lorelle in 1957, he went into the family insurance business, selling off the final remnants of the company, H&R Phillips Inc., only last year. But throughout his insurance career Mr. Phillips did sculpture on the side; or perhaps it’s more accurate to say he did insurance on the side while he pursued his career as a sculptor.

The bays of the old garage where cars were repaired for 50 years are these days filled with precision machine equipment and tools where John Staats, a master welder who has worked with Mr. Phillips since 1985, and his son Dylan execute Mr. Phillips’s designs. "Stainless steel is very hard to weld, actually," Mr. Phillips explained. "It pulls and warps."

Almost more of a challenge is suspending the geometric shapes from the metal. You can’t fully appreciate the engineered beauty of his work until you take it for a spin, literally, sending the circles or squares, which rotate on ball bearings, turning. "It’s taken a long time to perfect that," he said.

The bold blues, reds, and blacks are automobile paint, applied by John Davis, a classic-car painter in Valatie, N.Y., a couple of towns over. Each piece takes approximately three months from start to finish and is so resistant to weather, Mr. Phillips said, that it will be a decade or more before it shows any signs of wear.

The simplicity and lack of pretension of both the artist and his work is reflected in the pieces’ titles. They don’t have names like "The Garden of Earthly Delights" or "Untitled GBP 9." I asked Mr. Phillips what he called the sculpture with three diagonal yellow squares sitting in his shop. "That’s ‘three yellow squares diagonally,’" he said.

Banker’s deflation talk should ring alarms for the

By admin, 3 August, 2010, No Comment

James Bullard has discussed deflation before, but he got more attention than usual when he brought up the subject last week.

Maybe the reaction reflects the strong language that Bullard,Tiffany cuff links, president of the St. Louis Federal Reserve Bank, used to describe the risk of a sustained drop in the price level. Or maybe the sluggish economy has made Americans hypersensitive to such danger.

Friday’s report on the gross domestic product certainly did nothing to dispel the fears. The Commerce Department said GDP growth slowed noticeably in the second quarter, and it revised some earlier figures downward. In short, the recession was worse than we thought, and we’re coming out of it more slowly than everyone had expected.

Bullard, in an academic-type paper published Thursday, discussed the risk that the U.S. will wind up like Japan, which has been battling deflation for more than a decade. He says we are "closer to a Japanese-style outcome today than at any time in recent history."

He also thinks the Federal Reserve should be trying to prevent that outcome. He suggests that the Fed stop talking about an "extended period" of low interest rates and instead consider reviving its quantitative easing program.

That’s the program through which the central bank, after pushing short-term interest rates to zero, bought more than $1 trillion of long-term bonds in 2009 and early 2010. Most economists give the effort high marks, saying it helped keep the recession from turning into a depression.

Core inflation, however, is currently running at less than 1 percent a year. That’s dangerously close to zero — and to negative territory. If consumers expect prices to decline over time, they hoard money and delay purchases for as long as they can.

Such deflationary psychology is hard to reverse once it gets started. Therefore, Bullard and others argue, we should do everything possible to keep it at bay.

Scott Colbert,Tiffany bracelets, head of fixed-income investments at Commerce Trust Co. in Clayton, thinks Bullard is right to worry about deflation. Debt-laden consumers, he says, will be tightening their belts for years or even decades.

"It (deflation) has a higher probability than the new inflationary spiral that other people are talking about," Colbert says. "There’s no one right answer, but it is probably going to take some more monetary stimulus and more nontraditional measures to convince people that the Fed is not going to allow asset prices to fall."

Among economy watchers, there’s a wide range of opinion on how ominous the deflation threat is. Most,Tiffany earrings, though, are glad to see a central banker raising the alarm.

"We think the economy is just going through a normal slowdown after a first year of recovery,Tiffany rings," says Gary Thayer, chief macro strategist at Wells Fargo Advisors. "We don’t think deflation is the most likely scenario, and we think the Federal Reserve still has policy options to prevent it."

"Anytime you have debt going bump in the night, deflation is a threat," says Bob Doll, chief equity strategist at New York investment firm BlackRock. "It looms, the Fed needs to know what to do if we go there, but I don’t think we are going there yet."

One thing’s for sure: We don’t want to end up like Japan, which has been unable to shake the deflation that set in after its stock-market and real-estate bubbles burst in the 1990s. If Bullard, who has spent his career building a reputation as an inflation fighter, is worried about deflation, the rest of us should worry, too.

Action follows breakup of call-girl ring

By admin, 3 August, 2010, No Comment

A Reading police officer has been placed on administrative leave in connection with the raid and investigation of a Web-based callgirl ring in the city, sources said Friday.

The officer, whose name is being withheld by the Reading Eagle,Tiffany cuff links, has not been charged with a crime.

Berks County District Attorney John T. Adams said Friday it would be inappropriate to comment on the matter because of the ongoing investigation into the ring. At a press conference Wednesday, Adams said county detectives and members of the Berks County Drug Task Force would follow the investigation "wherever it takes us." The suspected mastermind of the ring, Paul S. Sewell,Tiffany pendants, 44, remains in Berks County Prison in lieu of $1 million bail. He’s charged with prostitution,Tiffany earrings, running a corrupt organization and related off enses. Three women who police said agreed to perform sex acts for money have been charged with prostitution. Authorities say Sewell operated the ring from a row home he owns in the 200 block of North 10th Street and another directly behind it on Fisher Court. County detectives began investigating the ring nine months ago. Authorities said Sewell, who calls himself God and had his call girls branded and tattooed with names like "God’s Rebel" and "God’s Taken,Tiffany Money Clips," allowed customers to choose from 20 women on websites and then arranged for customers to have sex with them for money.

Reading Police Chief William M. Heim declined to comment Friday on the possible involvement of a police offi cer and referred questions to the district attorney.

Officials said Sewell tried to become a Reading police officer in the 1980s but was kicked out of the police academy after an incident at the fi ring range.

He later became a constable in Kutztown but was removed after an incident at a borough bar, offi cials said.

Hewitt Analysis Shows Steady Decline in Global Emp

By admin, 1 August, 2010, No Comment

While the economy is slowly recovering, a recent analysis by Hewitt Associates, a global human resources consulting and outsourcing company, shows employee engagement and morale in the workplace are not. Almost half of organizations around the world saw a significant drop in employee engagement levels at the end of the June 2010 quarter–the largest decline Hewitt has observed since it began conducting employee engagement research 15 years ago. This highlights the growing tension between employers–many of which are struggling to stabilize their financial situation–and employees, who are showing fatigue in response to a lengthy period of stress, tiffany rings, uncertainty and confusion brought about by the recession and their company’s actions.

Since July 2008, at the onset of the economic downturn, Hewitt began closely analyzing changes in employee engagement levels by quarter for more than 900 organizations globally that conducted annual engagement studies. These studies covered topics such as employee morale, confidence in the organization, career opportunities, rewards and recognition programs, and trust in leadership.

Historically, Hewitt’s research shows that about half of these organizations improved their engagement levels in a one-or-two year period, tiffany bracelets, while only 15 percent had experienced a decline. However, the past two years have been more challenging: the percent of organizations with declining engagement has been steadily growing. This trend is particularly notable in 2010. Hewitt’s research shows that 46 percent of organizations experienced a decline in engagement levels in the quarter ending June 2010, while just 30 percent saw an improvement.

"The economic situation over the past two years has clearly strained the connection between employers and employees and the stress continues to increase, tiffany cuff Links," said Ted Marusarz, leader of Global Engagement and Culture at Hewitt. "Organizations are struggling to improve employee engagement,Charm bracelet, but they need to stay focused. The extra effort companies put forth now will make a difference in how successful they are at boosting employee morale and retaining top talent as the economy stabilizes and employee opportunities open up."

Engagement Linked to Financial Performance

Hewitt’s analysis suggests a clear link between employee engagement levels and financial performance. Organizations with high levels of engagement (where 65 percent or more of employees are engaged) outperformed the total stock market index even in volatile economic conditions. During 2009, total shareholder return for these companies was 19 percent higher than the average total shareholder return. Conversely, companies with low engagement (where less than 40 percent of employees are engaged) had a total shareholder return that was 44 percent lower than the average.

Steps to Improve Employee Engagement

In its work with organizations around the world, Hewitt has uncovered key factors that differentiate organizations that improve their engagement from those that are not. According to Hewitt, companies with improved engagement levels:

– Focus on the long term: While many of these organizations did cost-cutting and reductions in staff, they made changes consistent with their principles and values and without losing sight of their overall goals.

– Obtain buy-in from leadership: Engagement is a top priority for leaders at companies that saw improved engagement scores. Leaders at these organizations were visible and provided ongoing updates to reduce employee uncertainty and stress. They also created excitement among employees about the future of the organization (82 percent compared to 51 percent at other companies).

– Implement measurable actions: Successful organizations use employee information as a call to action rather than an assessment. They define specific and measurable actions and take steps in areas where the organization will see a clear impact.

– Involve all stakeholders: Organizations with improved engagement understand that creating a "high engagement" environment requires the involvement of multiple stakeholders–the organization (leadership, policies and program), managers and employees. They communicate to these stakeholders to ensure everyone is clear on their role in the process and on the employment proposition.

– Understand key employee segments: Successful organizations understand that not all employees are necessarily equal. They focus on key segments and critical talent so that they’re able to engage or re-engage them once the job market improves.

– Utilize a broader array of information and analytics: Hewitt’s analysis shows that 34 percent of organizations help employees through the on-boarding process to minimize the dip in engagement most organizations see in the first year of employment. Additionally, almost three quarters conduct exit surveys to understand why employees are leaving and proactively identify potential hot spots.

"Understanding what drives employee behavior–in good times and in bad–is critical to business success," said Marusarz. "All organizations face similar pressures. Companies that are successful at improving engagement in spite of these pressures are the ones that create an environment focused on key human capital elements. They may make adjustments to their engagement strategies, but they don’t lose sight of their overall goals."
