Bank fraud ring busted

By admin, 11 November, 2009, No Comment

A Vista woman was arrested yesterday and accused by the FBI of helping silver jewelry lead an international crime ring that tricked bank customers into sharing personal information that was used to drain their accounts.

The ring, which stretched from the southwestern United States to North Carolina to Egypt, stole between $1 million and $2 million, the FBI said.

Nichole Michelle Merzi, 24, was arrested by FBI agents in Oceanside without incident, said Darrell Foxworth, an FBI spokesman. She was among 33 people who were taken into custody in the United States, while the FBI seeks 21 more. An additional 47 defendants were charged in Egypt by authorities there.

Computer hackers in Egypt sent out mass e-mails, known as phishing, Tiffany Accessories that appeared to be official correspondence from banks or credit card companies, the FBI said. Customers were directed to fake Web sites, which look like the financial institutions named in the e-mails, where customers were asked to enter account numbers, passwords and other personal information.

With the data in hand, the hackers coordinated with codefendants in the United States to transfer funds from victims’ accounts to ones set up by the crime ring in order to withdraw the money, the FBI said.

Merzi is accused of recruiting “runners” to open up the accounts on behalf of the crime ring, the FBI said. Some of the money was later wired back to the Egyptian hackers.

Most of the victims were customers of Bank of America and Wells Fargo, the FBI said.

All of the defendants are charged in a 51-count indictment, unsealed yesterday in Los Angeles Tiffany Keys, with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and bank fraud. If convicted, they face a maximum punishment of up to 20 years in federal prison.
